Digital twins have been commonly used in many industries historically and well understood. For the electric utility sector, adopting such a technology isn't as simple as importing the same software and processes as used by other industries. Careful consideration of the composition of the electric grid and the complex frameworks and IT/OT architectures that currently exist today within utilities must be made before embarking on a digital twin implementation journey. This presentation will share insights into what digital twins mean for electric utilities by providing an over-arching definition of digital twins specific for the electric utility sector, discuss considerations to the architecture and core functionalities of digital twins, and use cases. The presentation will also propose a key architecture assumption, open standards to facilitate data interoperability, to enable the scalability and longevity of digital twin functionalities and use cases. Finally the application of digital twins to improve engineering maintenance, operations, design, and planning functions will be covered to show the full potential of this technology.
