Energy flexibility is considered an important piece of the puzzle to enable the energy transition. However, now that we are introducing new infrastructure and protocols to utilize energy flexibility, we must make sure that it is future-proof for changes in the type of assets, energy flexibility and optimization targets to mitigate unnecessary updates after the infrastructure is deployed. During this talk we shall present the opensource S2 protocol which expresses energy flexibility using abstract device types and their goals so current and expected future assets can be expressed and there is a clear separation between communicating the energy flexibility and the optimization goal(s). We shall also briefly compare S2 to other known similar protocols and standards. The goal of the S2 protocol is to remain an opensource standard; available for anyone to integrate. As such, it is standardized as EN 50491-12-2.
